Member Update: Support for those in fire affected areas of Victoria
January 13, 2026The bushfires impacting communities across Victoria have been devastating, and my thoughts are with all those affected – residents, council staff, elected members and volunteers. Many are balancing professional responsibilities while supporting their own families and communities, often under extraordinarily difficult conditions. I want to sincerely acknowledge the tireless efforts of firefighters, emergency services personnel and council teams who continue to respond with professionalism and care.
Local government is, as always, at the heart of the response; opening relief centres, supporting evacuations, coordinating recovery services and ensuring communities are not facing this alone. Finance professionals play a critical role in enabling this work; with much of it happening behind the scenes, and I want to recognise the resilience, professionalism and compassion you bring to it.
Both the Victorian and Australian Governments have announced support for fire-affected communities. This includes:
- the declaration of a State of Disaster
- activation of emergency relief and recovery services
- financial assistance for individuals and families
- support for farmers and livestock welfare
- mental health and wellbeing programs; and
- assistance to help people begin rebuilding after loss.
These measures are critical in helping communities move from immediate response into recovery.
FinPro will be reaching out to members in councils directly affected to listen, check in and understand what support is needed. Where there are emerging finance-related issues, pressures or lessons from the ground, we will continue to raise these through our advocacy to ensure the sector’s experience is clearly understood.
Most importantly, please prioritise your own safety and wellbeing, and that of your teams. Events like these take a toll and it is vital that we continue to look after one another as a sector.
If there are issues you believe FinPro should be aware of, or opportunities where we can better support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are here to support you.
Stay safe and thank you for the vital work you do for your communities.
Warm regards,
Tony Rocca
